Fat(max) - Lactate Testing

Using a short-duration step protocol and continuous indirect calorimetry, whole-body rates of fat and carbohydrate oxidation can be estimated across a range of exercise workloads, along with the individual maximal rate of fat oxidation (MFO) and the exercise intensity at which MFO occurs (Fatmax).

The FatMax test lasts about 20-45 min, depending mostly on how trained the athlete is. The test starts at a low intensity and every 3 min the intensity is increased. During the test, expired gases are collected and/or measured from the athlete. We also take lactate samples to build a lactate curve. These are used to calculate fat burning as well as carbohydrate burning.
